Sometime during the first quarter of 2012, SAE International says it will officially establish a worldwide standard, calling for an integrated coupler for plug-in vehicles. The SAE says this J1772 combo coupler will allow plug-in vehicles to be charged from either a conventional, 15-amp AC wall outlet or a DC connection of up to 90 kilowatts. The under-development SAE J1772 combo coupler would "take another leap toward stabilizing and unifying the global market" for manufacturers of plug-in vehicles, says SAE International. The standard will enable both AC and DC charging of up to 90 kW all via a single vehicle connection for the first time ever. Manufacturers would be able to use one coupler in plug-in vehicles sold across the globe, regardless of differences in electrical systems and charging sources. This, according to the SAE, would enhance the convenience of operating a plug-in vehicle. The SAE J1772 "Electric Vehicle and Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle Conducive Charge Coupler" - agreed to back in 2009 and published by SAE International in January of 2010 - was the world's first industry-consensus standard, providing critical guidelines for safety, charging control and connectors used to link plug-in vehicles to a charging source.
